Cut for 1.11 spoilers and future speculation )

I've still to look properly for Dreamwidth comm's, so any rec's from new DW friends would be appreciated.  I have globbed onto the fandom_wank feed (which is great as I hardly ever log into journalfen) and have been informed of someone attempting to "force" JKR to rewrite HP.  A guy with an M.A. (so he must know what he's talking about. /pointless snarkiness ) wants JK to rewrite the books as Harry himself is irrelevant and Hermione could've done much better with the boys.  I don't disagree, even with that pesky scar horcrux.  There are thousands upon thousands of things I would've liked her to change, had I such power.

But I don't.  Because it's art (in the broad sense of the term), she's the artist and I'm the audience.  And unless it's a Choose Your Own Adventure book then, as the audience, I'm in no position to be instructing the direction of said art.

That's it - simple as.  And if can't accept this then don't read the books; or do what most of us do and write screeds of fanfic righting these wrongs.  I understand that his problems are logical literature and editor based problems but I'm sure he could still go back and revise the whole series himself.

Then get sued. :)

First journal post in this shiny new journal land.

I am impressed with what I've seen so far (particularly the importing and cross posting functions). Should the communities and such develop over the next month, I'll be tempted into buying an account as narrowing my many icons down to 6 was a task I was not prepared for... Not to mention the absence of my beloved BtVS moodtheme...

I haven't really scouted around much for communities yet, having only just posted my introduction to  [community profile] dreamchasers this afternoon.

I'm off to ferret around a bit more before I do a proper post later on tonight about the writing stuff that's been happening lately.

Let others know a little more about yourself by re-posting and tagging your friends.

1) What is your salad dressing of choice?
Balsamic vinegar

2) What is your favorite sit-down restaurant?
There was a great fresh Italian place in Newcastle I went to with my mum when I was looking at uni’s  – Can’t remember the name, but it was great.  Either that, or this excellent Mexican down Leith shore.  Can’t remember the name of that either…  Favourite chain would be Frankie and Benny’s.

3) What food could you eat for 2 weeks straight and not get sick of it?
Bread, because I already have bread nearly every day for toast in the morning.

4) What are your pizza toppings of choice?
Pineapple.  I don’t abide people who rail against fruit on pizza.

5) What do you like to put on your toast?
Margarine.  Pate, although that really only happens once a year around Christmas.  For the rest of the time I forget how good meat on toast can be.

6) How many televisions are in your house?
4, and an infinite number of DVD players.

7) What colour cell phone do you have?
Black with silver trim.  I like it very much.

8) Are you right-handed or left-handed?
Right handed.

9) Have you ever had anything removed from your body?
Tonsils.  An alien spore.

10) What is the last heavy item you lifted?
My dog, onto the table at the vets.

11) Have you ever been knocked unconscious?
Nope, but I always wanted to be.  Never fainted either.

12) If it were possible, would you want to know the day you were going to die?
Nope.  Like Big Fish says, it could help knowing when you die because you could survive everything up until that point.  But just knowing the date doesn’t tell you which philosophy of fate it prescribes to: i.e. If this is a fixed date, no matter what or if everything is in flux due to your knowledge of it.  So, to keep things simple I wouldn’t want to know.

13) If you could change your name, what would you change it to?
I’m not sure I’d suit another name – as much as I’m convinced that I don’t suit my present one.  Maybe Juliet, though I’d hate to be called “Julie.”  Isabella is my favourite name, but I’m saving that for the offspring.  Maybe I’d just shorten myself to L.J.  How early 90’s of me.

14) Would you drink an entire bottle of hot sauce for $1000?
If I was guaranteed to survive.  I read a thing about a guy dying from a chilli pepper eating contest.  I don’t do well with hot stuff but I could get through it for a grand I suppose.  When drunk, me and my uni compadres would dare each other 50p to eat various ridiculous condiments available on the table.  I’m sure hot sauce would be an improvement on horseradish.  Yeuck.  I’m shuddering at the recollection.

15) How many pairs of flip flops do you own?
1 pair, I think.  I can’t remember if I chucked them during my last merciless clear out.

16) What’s your goal for the year?
I have about 6 or 7.  I wrote a list of short and long term goals the other night.

17) Last person you talked to?
Katie.  She called me last night as I was about to go to sleep at 10: which was extra wussy of me.  She wanted to tell me to watch The Apprentice even though she knows I dislike reality stuff and don’t watch UK broadcast TV.

18) Last person you hugged?
Laura as I was leaving.

19) Favorite Season?
Autumn.

20) Favorite Holiday?
Used to be Hogmanay but last years was a non event and I didn’t even drink.  Now I’m practically verging on straight edge (urg) I’m not sure.  I’ll say the Illuminations which is the end of the season festival on Cumbrae when all the shops along the front of the island decorate their windows (and sometimes roofs) with the most extravagant and imaginative displays.  I’ve not been for many years, but memories as a kid with a pack of sparklers, walking along the front and waiting for the fireworks were great.

21) Favorite day of the week?
Don’t really have one.  Not Sunday, as transport is intolerable.  My Saturdays are usually eaten up with football.  Fridays are OK.  I don’t think I really have one.  I’ll say Thursday.

22) Favorite Month?
It would be November, were it not for the knowledge of Christmas around the corner.  I’m surprised I’m not being told to do my shopping now – Only 9 months, minus a day until Christmas!  *vomits*

23) First place you went this morning?
To the kitchen to double check when the notice said the water would be off from and to.

24) What's the last movie you watched?
I finally watched The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.  The DVD’s been sitting there for what seems like years.  S’OK.  Jesse James deserved it and Mary Louise Parker wasn’t in it nearly enough.

25) Do you smile often?
Not really.  Prefer to stay in neutral.

26) Do you always answer your phone when it rings?
Do I always hear my phone when it rings?

27) It's four in the morning and you get a text message, who is it?
It would be a drunk apology or confession, and I can’t think of who that would be right now.  95% of my friends are responsible home owning, family having, rat race job working adults.  Boring, but I love ‘em anyway.  It would probably be Katie, she usually calls when she’s hammered.

28) If you could change your eye color what would it be?
I like my green eyes.  If anything, I would make them a sharper green all the time.  It’s actually the only green coloured thing I do like – I generally don’t like the colour.

29) What flavor drink do you get at Sonic
I do not know what this means.

30) Have you ever had a pet fish?
Plenty.  We even had mini eel fish when I was wee.  We had a proper fish tank and everything, with lovely coloured fish.  But it was a mere fairground goldfish who lasted the longest – 8 years – which I’m sure means something in the scale of the universe.

31) Favorite Christmas song?
I think Silver Bells, mostly because of the fast interlaced vocals and dramatic effect used in Home Alone 2.

32) What's on your wish list for your birthday?
Nothing. I really don’t like receiving presents.

33) Can you do push ups?
I can.  I can even do the clap in the middle.  Then I fall on my face.

34) Can you do a chin up?
Nope. My chin’s not that cool.

35) Does the future make you more nervous or excited?
Neither.  I feel more interested.  It’s the present I get nervous or excited about.

36) Do you have any saved texts?
I never delete texts so they’re saved by laziness.

37) Ever been in a car wreck?
Wreck, no.  Fender bender, yes.

38) Do you have an accent?
What an idiotic question this is.  Of course I have an accent.  Everyone has an accent.

39) What is the last song to make you cry?
Apocalyptica’s Fade to Black.  It has the most beautiful note ever heard, and the cello is just the instrument to play it.  I spent a hangover/weepy break up day lounging about eating crap and listening to this song on headphones.

40) Plans tonight?
Not really.  Maybe decide what project I want to work on, cause I’m getting no where fast by going in 6 different directions.

41) Have you ever felt like you hit rock bottom?
I have.  I did not enjoy it.

42) Name 3 things you bought yesterday.
A new blue football, AC Milan football socks that were on sale (I love sleeping in football socks) and new training bottoms.

43) Have you ever been given roses?
Yep.

44) Current hate right now?
The fricking road works through the centre of town which is making everything a nightmare and I have not yet seen them working.  It’s supposed to go on for another 3 weeks and they are not doing a fricking thing.  It’s making everyone crazy.  I’m quite glad I’m not in Edinburgh for the month long shutdown of Princes Street with no work done.  That would make me mega crazy, and also quite sad – the roads have been butchered and the centre of town looks a complete state.

45) Met someone who changed your life?
It’s hard to say.  Hard to say whether my life was changing already.

46) Have you ever dated someone longer than a year?
Just under a year.  Twice.  I never seem to be able to make it to that anniversary

47) Do you have any tattoos/ piercings?
My ears were pierced when I was younger but I haven’t worn earrings for about a decade.  Got the side of my lip pierced in uni and wore it for about a year, but kept losing the ball for the ring and got fed up.  It’s still open though, as well as my ears.

48) Does anyone love you?
My dog – she loves me and has no qualms about showing me.  Apart from that, my parents and my closest friends.

49) Do you like to cuddle?
Sometimes and only with certain people.

50) Have you held hands with anyone today?
Nope.

51) Who was the last person you took a picture of?
I don’t take pictures of people, I take pictures of places and yesterday it was the view of the Haylie Brae above Largs.  My shitty wee camera phone pics do not do it justice.

52) Have you ever ridden an elephant?
No.

53) Do you like to play Scrabble?
I don’t mind it.  I prefer Monopoly.

54) How did you bring in the New Year?
Playing Guitar Hero and sitting in my friends kitchen.  There was no party, it was just us who couldn’t be bothered going out.

55) What song represents you?
I’m not sure as I only ever relate songs to other people.

56) What were you doing 12 AM last night?
Sleeping, huzzah!  I’m quite happy I’ve got into a good healthy sleep pattern.

57) What was the first thing you thought of when you woke up?
What are you doing in my room?

I went to a first division football match tonight, in honour of my dads boyhood club Greenock Morton.  It was freezing and it was goal less.  I bought him a scarf though, so I'm sure he'll enjoy that when I see him.

Terracing was fun; the usual banter and humour - which included a ten year boy whose voice hadn't broken screaming at the top of his lungs.  But it was freezing and the football was terrible.  There were 17 goals in the other 4 games tonight in that division - we saw none.  Sigh.  Not to mention the scores from the champions league tonight looked like really exciting games.  I've sky-plussed them as I'm knackered and have to get up early tomorrow to go sort out some paperwork for my interview for a government job on Saturday.  I hate that I have to get pieces of paper which say that I am who I say I am.

Also - The L Word finale was heinous.  I'm still raging about it.  What a total non-conclusion.  I posted about it like mad over on the lword comm yesterday as I was so hyped up.

Yawn yawn yawn

My internet is being throttled big time, thus rendering it practically unusable.  It should not take more than a minute to load up Google.  But it does.  That’s how bad it is.  It’s the scam of the Fair Use policy all ISP’s are slamming on their unlimited downloads customers.  If I pay for unlimited bandwidth, I should fucking well get it.  That’s how angry I am about it.  There’s not a lot I can do about it, seeing as they’re scummily breaking the contract in a legal way.  Tricksters and charlatans, I say.  Not to mention Westminsters proposing yet more legislation on broadband restrictions and access.  They should work on building the infrastructure instead of whatever the fuck they’re doing now.  I’m quite fuming.  I do not take kindly to idiots fucking with my internets.

Looking for another job, again, mostly due to my knack of landing temporary contract jobs as opposed to the other kind.  It’s good in a way, as I get writing done in between, but it’s frustrating.  I’m applying for something in the civil service, which is ideal as my ethics just do not mesh with the private sector.  I despise working in a cog in the machine environment with more emphasis on profit than actual flesh and blood humans – be it employees or consumers.  I do hate capitalism more each day – though it’s the best system we’ve got.

I see friends grow more accomplished in the lives they have chosen: steady careers, mortgages and some with families.  I’m not envious, but I still struggle with the traditional notion of life at this stage of life compared to what I’m doing.  If I bought a beret and moved to Paris, I’m sure I’d feel better.

I do want to have something extraordinary, but it would be so much easier to relent and join the commuter crowd, resigning the writing to the back burner of life, get the house and settle down.  But I’d go crazy, burning with unfulfilled dreams and resentment.

Hmm.  The green grass on the other side looks so much more together and sure of itself.  I’m constantly wracked with doubt, worry and all that good stuff.  Or maybe that’s just the person that I am and that won’t change if I move to the suburbs and adopt a golden retriever.  But mostly I think I’m worried that I’m incapable of growing up.  And most of the time I don’t see why I should.

That’s enough of that.  I’m working on a comedy-drama pilot script at the moment, because there are always competitions and opportunities to get TV scripts out there, and I’ve got nothing remotely adaptable for that medium.  Plus I’ve never tried it before.

I’m sure I have more things to say but sleepiness is taking over…  Will catch up on f-list tomorrow.  Will.

Urgh

My head’s ready for bursting.  I’m working on some sketches right now for Friday, to send away to a new news/cultural sketch show which will be on the radio to see if they want to give me a job.  I love the idea of sitting about in a staff room, reading newspapers and making fun of stuff for a living.  But in reality it’s quite difficult to write a good sketch.  Something not redundant or overdone and most of all funny.  I think I’d really enjoy it and be good at it, but I need to get my shooting boots on.  I like to derive a lot of comedy from specific dialects and “patter” – but that’s not really an option in a nationwide thing.

I’ve formulated a few ideas.  Some that could actually be good enough to send away, and some not (a send-up of Oscar speeches last night… I feel too good about Kate Winslet winning to be snarky and bitchy about it re: shampoo bottle.  Surely we all did something similar?)

Few notes on current TV:

24:  Long since abandoned.  Season 6 was terrible and 7’s not that great.  Watched first four or five episodes while doing the ironing and I really have thrown in the towel.

Gossip Girl:  Not been on in a month or whatever, but still pleasing me.

Heroes:  Last episode I watched was when Elle died.  It wasn’t wholly intentional, but it was just too, too awful to continue.  I don’t even miss it.

L Word: Jenny’s a crazy bitch, half the characters annoy me and the writers are gonna fuck with my TiBette again:  Frustration is nothing new with this show.  Just 2 episodes left – ever - and Lucy Lawless in the finale.  That’s something to look forward to.

House: Gagging hard on the Foreteen but House has been watch-able.

Dollhouse: Was so very not impressed with the first episode.  SO very not.  And it’s Whedon.  And Eliza – wtf is wrong with me?  From prostitution (well that’s how I choose to see it when a millionaire purchases Eliza Dushku for the weekend, implants her with a bondage tendency personality and then wipes her afterwards once his time has expired) to paedophilia.  The second one is sitting on my hard drive and I cannot bring myself to watch it.  The concept – which sounded interesting when first announced – seems ridiculous and vaguely disgusting.  I know Buffy the Vampire Slayer sounded dopey from the outset – think way, way back before you’d even seen it – the name was awful.  But the show was so brilliantly crafted it didn’t matter – it just made it all the more endearing.  If Firefly got cancelled, but this stays on the air then the masses really do have no taste.

I don’t think I even bother with anything else anymore.  TV has not been stellar.  Even the last season of Weeds blew.

Ach.  Back to the drawing (sketching) board.  I am so very not funny…

I'm not writing to you from in the midst of a blizzard - that was yesterday. I arose mega early, like the weather was my alarm clock and went out walking. I did look a bit strange in non-matching winterwear just wandering around as if I'd never seen so much of the white stuff before. This was mostly because I didn't have the puppy with me. She fell and hurt her leg while running about daft at the weekend, so she's on the crippled list. She just hobbles about, looking forlorn because she missed the snow she loves so much. I couldn't even take her out for a walk in the strictest sense of the word, because there is no way she's sensible enough to take it easy and just hobble along the road. Nope, she'd be jumping into the burn, swimming and running about mad as usual, ignoring the pain. She doesn't know when to quit and would hurt herself more, ergo the housebound dog. I've renamed her Limpy for the interim peroid.

Pfft... Wish I had something more interesting to say... Not won any Tony's yet, but have ripped some CD's onto my ps3 and discovered, like, 10 more things it's capable of.

Been doing some gutting out. I'm a keeper- as in, I keep everything just in case it comes in useful one day. It's something I inheirited from my mother who's much worse than I. I've been looking back through my set of uni notebooks which contain more cartoons and conversations than actual lecture notes. There are also a lot of shitty 'beginning of a play' stuff in there as well. Lots of pretentious conversations between arsey urbanites and wanky dialogue for disembodied voices. Awful, awful stuff.

How did it go today?

Incredibly, incredibly fucking well.

Full report tomorrow once I've slept.

I can barely do the dance of joy, I'm so tired
lynsangelic1: (Default)
So, I was going to go to Collectormania at Braehead on Saturday but because I'm jiggering about shifts for the playreading, it's not possible anymore.  Shame, because Juliet Landau is going to be there. Amber Benson was supposed to be going - And for her I would've walked to Braehead and ninja'd my way in.  Suppose its a good thing she's not coming after all, as I'd probably end up licking her face or similar.  Not that Drusilla isn't someone to geek the fuck out about - But Tara... Oh Tara.  I'd make her sing to me.  Then lick her face.

Got a call from the literary assistant today, confirming my workshop for half 2 til half 5.  I've been running various scenarios in my head over the past day.  My safety scenario of the "potential" speech, the workshop being a "useful exercise" and the advice etc - the more likely one, really.  Then for fun, I run the fantasy scenario.  Just for fun... Then revert to low expectations of the "potential" speech to slap myself in the face.

It's kinda bugging me that I don't even know if they liked it or not.  I know that an invite like this should be indicative enough, but it's making me nervous.  After all, I didn't get great feedback from my ex-lecturer.  My fellow playwriting alum, K,  doesn't put much faith in his opinion as he's old and Ibsen-esque.  We love him to pieces, but not his theatrical taste so much.  He is a good teacher and I developed so much while at Uni.  I have wondered whether that would've happened without university, but just by maturing.  I've come to the conclusion that Uni just greatly accelerated and honed skills which I might have taken a decade or so to come round by myself.  Maybe.  Ive always been a very good self-taught pupil.  It's a shame I lack discipline.

Ah well.  Only 7 more sleeps til the day.

In addition, I'm trying to figure out whether one of the temps at work is a dirty homosexual.  Not because I fancy her - I'm just nosy.  There have been a few indicators.  First day, she was talking about Angelina Jolie films and how much she's her favourite actress.  Angie is a fantastic actress, and she would be fantastic even if she wasn't so bloody hot.  But the question I pose is: Is it possible to have huge love for a great actress that just oozes fuckability in everything she does - like Angelina?  That could just be me though, having mooned over her for 7 years now...

Anyway, I'll probe further.  My gaydar is just awful.  I'm really only good at "ten footers" and they're obvious to blind people.

To finish: An inaccurately paraphrased House quote which in no way follows the whiny theme of this entry - If you think someone else's life is more important than yours, then stamp your donor card and kill yourself.

I just thought it was funny.

Hello.

Well, that’s a best an opening to a long-time-coming update as any.

And I’ll follow with a list of what I’ve been up to (that I can remember)

  • Decided to go teetotal for a while (until New Year at least)
  • Played a lot of pool (with the common red and yellow balls as opposed to the classy spots n’ stripes) and drank a lot of soft drinks.  (That’s how to have a night out in this economic climate)
  • Killed the teetotaller in me with the free bar at the work Christmas party.  Beer bongs and several Aftershock Challenges saw to that: both my idea.
  • Read Twilight.  Didn’t care much for it as I really couldn’t get into the central character of Bella, or their relationship.  By the end when (SPOILERS) she’s begging him to turn her into a vampire, I was visibly grimacing and audibly tutting on the train while reading.
  • Liked Chinese Democracy despite the fact I’m always hated Guns n’ Roses.  Yes, it only came out today, but I’ve been listening to it since Friday.
  • Sent away 8 scripts end of last month.  Have gotten 6 “thank you for play, we’re reading it, we’ll get back to you in 3 months if it’s any crack” replies.  The Beeb one was a pretty postcard.  The two I haven’t heard from are the Finborough in London and the Traverse – which is bizarre, because I’ve spoken to the lit. assistant there face to face, and emailed a couple of times before sending the play in.  I’ll actually send her an email now asking if she got it, as it’s been exactly a month.
  • Went through my usual Oh My God, I’ve Just Spent Six Months Writing Shit phase, a month after completion.  The only difference is that I’ve spewed it out into the world now and I. Just. Can’t. Take. It. Back.
  • Decided I will now have to get act together to apply for graduate LLB course as cannot spend rest of life living payday to payday, scrimping for enough money for bus fare and all this shit.  Surely if I’m not good enough to be writing for a living, I should be able to make a living from arguing.  Over simplified, yes.  Very inaccurate, yes: but it’s my livejournal.
  • Had a few ideas for my next project, but unsure if I can really get into any.  Also considering trying teleplay or film script but it’s always been a turn off due to the more technical emphasis and layout.  I probably couldn’t comfortably and effortlessly produce that with Word, ergo a script writing program blah blah blah, I’m just spewing out loud (read: on screen) now.
  • Given up on Heroes.  It’s truly awful.  The Sylar/Angela stuff is truly cringe worthy and the Arthur Petrelli stuff makes me want to claw my eyes out.  Last I saw, Elle went to get her powers taken away. I don’t know if she’s been on it since.  I’m trying not to care.  KBell’s got plenty of other work.  I’m sure one day she’ll play another electrically charged sociopath again.  Perhaps.
  • I’ve actually nearly given up on most shows.  Seems only Gossip Girl is worth watching.
  • Joined NaNoWriMo on 3rd of November. Wrote 199 words.  Gave up.  The story I wanted (want?) to write lives in a world far too huge and complicated to make up as I go along.  And yes, that’s the beauty of NaNoWriMo but I like planning and researching.  In some ways, it’s my favourite part.  I’ve wanted to take part for several years, but I always forget until too late in the game.  Maybe next year.
  • It snowed on Saturday, for about half an hour after midnight as we were coming out of the bar.  It was quite lovely.

Another thing: There is a truly beautiful sky out tonight.  The stars are so crisp and clear and constellations litter the sky.  Nights like this make me feel grand, yet pathetic.

Anyone who’s been on my flist for a while might have noticed I do slip away every now and again.  It’s not because I don’t enjoy being here and the silly/wonderful/funny/interesting things that happen.  I just generally suck.

lynsangelic1: (Others:Kristen Bell)
Is it me, or does this season plain suck?

Have the cheesy/hammy/terrible lines really increased tenfold?

Are they just regurgitating a lot of stuff from general superhero canon?

Has the "plot twist" eye-rolling factor soared beyond all comprehension?
(I can think of about seven of these in this season alone)

Do the new characters just seem shallow and pointless?

Do the old characters seem 300% more irritating than they once were?
(For this I'm looking at Hiro, Peter, Nathan, Mohinder.  Maya has actually decreased in the irritation stakes while Parkman continues his incredible,  improbable rise to 5000% more irritating, which increases on weeks that he doesn't even appear)

When did my favourite character become Sylar?
(I actually know the answer to this one.  It was after the "Claire - That's disgusting" line)

Answers?  Any Heroes fans left?

I think we all know my suggestion for making Heroes better.  More.Kristen.Bell.  It's a stopgap, but a very pretty stopgap.

Researchers have developed a robot which can tackle the chores, dance and show emotion.

I've been watching Battlestar Galactica lately - Usually spaceship sci-fi is soooo not my thing.  But it was highly rec'd  and I was enticed by the use of Greek mythology.  I managed to liberate the mini series and season 1 from ebay for pennies.  I'm now on season four and enjoying very much. I love my over reaching arc stuff, but I do like that there's a definite end point - though not so much that the end is very much nigh and I'll have to wait til January to watch with everyone else is rubbish.

Anyway.  Not the point of this post that I had to make, as I fall asleep, typing one handed.  The point is that when I read the blurb of this article on the homepage of yahoo, an unintentional strangled cry of 'No' escaped my throat.

Robots feeling emotion?  Intelligence?  Have we learned nothing from Terminator, BSG and the Matrix???  It's all there.  I'm not usually so paranoid, and I don't think a truly sentient mechanoid will be created in my lifetime but with steps such these and thoughts like "Hey, what harm could a dumb chore-doing machine be?" I can't help but see what lies ahead.

I'm starting a coalition for the Anti-Robot Future.  Unite!

Or maybe I just need to turn off BSG and get some sleep, Y/Y??

Damnit.  I can't see what damn keys I'm pressing and I've just made my firefox window full screen.  Freaking me out.  the robots did it. That should teach me for operating machinery while half passed-out and OD'd on sci-fi...

lynsangelic1: (Others:Kristen Bell)

Tis been a busy week, most of it boring.

But on Tuesday/ Wednesday morning I did finish (the first draft which runs at over 2 hours) of my play – Huzzah!  I had the usual loopy, sleep deprived day after in which I loved everything and the world seemed infinitely better.  I’ve sent it out to a few friends for feedback and after that I’ll fix and polish and then will use it to try in vain to convince theatre people that I can write and that they do want to pay me for the privilege.

Also entered a competition with an old play which my old tutor feels I have a good shot at.  I had to fit specific criteria – 3 characters, living urban or rural Scots dialect and under an hour – So I sent in the play I often consider to be the bastard spawn, if I were to look at my various works as children.  I don’t know why I consider it the let down and the bastard spawn because I actually enjoy it when I read it, instead of squirming.  Perhaps I feel that way because it’s fairly crude and the plot isn’t overly taxing (read: simple).  I didn’t do the extreme planning and research I usually do, because it didn’t really call for it.  I wanted to have a go at writing about male friendship because I’m usually quite female-centric ;)

We’ll see though.  I have a feeling that this competition might be trying to find a Sunset Song-y type of play, about fucking farms.  Urgh.  I feel like poking my eyes out when I read that genre in Scottish literature.  So perhaps two Edinburgh boys who play computer games, worship football and argue about which Disney film was the last great Disney isn’t what they’re looking for.  There’s more to it than that, but most of the disgusting humour comes out of those two.

Here’s a movie which a highly, highly recommend you see: Boy A.  Terrific.  It’s British movie about a youth murderer who gets his life together after release with the help of his social worker.  Moving, horrifying, so, so well written and dare I say beautiful?

And here’s some opinions on the start to some TV shows – Heroes, Fringe and House.  I have been watching other stuff – Gossip Girl which I’m fairly happy with (zee014 : I thought of you during this weeks hockey skirt wearing scene – I’m still working on those Lively legs).  And I have seen Grey’s, but not sure I want to comment on it yet.

This is the author auction I mentioned a few days ago.

This is why - from supportstacie.net
Like millions of Americans Stacie ([livejournal.com profile] truelovepooh ) was unable to afford expensive health insurance premiums and kept her fingers crossed that she wouldn’t require medical treatment. A 34 year old wife and mother of three had no reason to think her health would be an issue - she was young and had no previous health concerns.
Her life changed on March 26th 2007 when she was diagnosed with both stage 2 ovarian cancer and breast cancer.
Pooh was forced to give up her job and has faced numerous visits to see doctors and specialists at the Trover Medical Foundation where she is being treated. Unfortunately, because she did not have insurance the medical bills are mounting and whilst the hospital are being very understanding and providing limited financial assistance the expenses are huge.
Many of you who read this blog will know “Pooh” - she will have touched your lives with her kindness, warmth and generosity - someone you can count on and who always puts others before herself. Also, many of you who read this blog may not know Stacie. You may have been directed here by friends or by following a link from one of the sites that are supporting our fundraising drive. Please take a moment to read this blog and find out what you can do to help a wonderful person in her battle with cancer.

Stacie is going to need constant treatment over the coming months and she needs our help to fight this disease. We are starting a fundraising drive to help support Stacie and her family.

This
is what we're doing - from supportstacie.net

A Fanfic-On-Demand fundraiser is underway for friends of Stacie. Authors in any fandom are invited to write a short fic on demand. The writing challenges will be delivered to each participating author by the highest bidder in their personal auction, which will run September 8-14, 2008 here at SupportStacie.net.

The highest bidder gets to deliver the fic challenge to the author they’ve “won,” along with the story’s pairing, the rating, and other pertinent details (within reason and within the author’s stated fandom and limitations - i.e., some authors prefer not to write smut or a certain pairing). The author will be given up to 30 days to finish the fic, beginning with the day that payment is received.

What I'm doing

I've got 3 auctions going on - a 2,500+ word Harry Potter femslash, a 2,500+ word Grey's Anatomy femslash and a sneak preview of chapter nine of the This Is A Problem series which will be 5,000+ words. You get to set me to work. You say Hooch/Giant Squid, I'll be writing it. [As long as the Qiant Squid is female - cause, y'know, femmeslash only ;) ] You want raunchy mop cupboard sex, you got it. You want a heartbreaking unrequited Katie Bell/Professor Sinistra love story, it's all yours. Just put up the cash ;)

I'm trying to find the words to explain why I'm taking part, but I feel it's quite obvious.

[livejournal.com profile] truelovepooh is a fantastic, caring, kind hearted person battling not only cancer, but an obscene medical financial system. She needs more treatment but the hospital won't allow anymore until "unless a substantial payment is made".

We all love our fandom community, especially here on LJ. Friendships can be forged over oceans and 'ships and in the strangest of ways. As fandom, we can band together to participate in something we can not only enjoy, but show amazing compassion and support for one of our own.

Grab a banner from here. Put it on your f-list! Annoy people to death about the auction! Because it is important. And not for my ego - there are 57 authors in this auction from a cross-section of fandoms so I'm willing to bet there's something for everyone. So - pimp, pimp, pimp.

And please bid. Haven't we all wanted a little writer puppet at one time or another? A wicked little writer puppet to do with as you please...

Seriously Jakey?

It's a jk, right?  All just a joke.

The work this man has done has aided the production of the films which make you extra mega mega rich and you yourself have admitted to using his work while writing when out and about.

You go after him when there are so many more unofficial "companion" guides  - The majority of which are total guff and have not contributed to your fortune in any small way.

To top it off, he has to pay you just under 7 grand.  I'm sure he needs it more than you.  I'm sure 7 grand is what falls out of your back pocket when you shake your trousers before putting them in the wash.

For shame, I say.  For shame.

Edit: I wrote about this trial a while ago and bit more coherently here.

Oh, and hooray for new posting code/system/technical whatever.  It means I only have to enter a link address once now because they don't immediately disappear with "error javascript" in place of the web address.  That was really pissing me off.

Rock me, Amadeus (Or how Mozart and heavy metal fans have more in common than they'd like to admit)

Fans of Mozart and other classical composers were found to be innovative and self-confident ... just like followers of heavy metal bands such as Kiss, despite the age difference
Fans of Mozart and other classical composers were found to be innovative and self-confident ... just like followers of heavy metal bands such as Kiss, despite the age difference

Published Date: 05 September 2008
FANS of heavy metal music are usually portrayed as long-haired students playing air guitar in their grubby rooms. Classical music lovers, by contrast, are stereotyped as serious, grey-haired and overwhelmingly middle-class.
But these apparent opposites have more in common than people might imagine, according to a study yesterday.

Researchers found fans of Motorhead shared "virtually identical" personality traits with Mozart lovers, both being unusually creative and introverted.

As part of a study into the link between people's musical tastes and their personalities, psychologists at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh asked more than 36,000 people worldwide to rate 104 musical styles and questioned them on aspects of their personality.

Professor Adrian North, Heriot-Watt's head of applied psychology, said the results showed musical tastes could directly reflect people's characters.

While indie music listeners tended to lack self-esteem, pop music fans were largely uncreative, he said. People into country and western were hard-working, rap fans were outgoing, and lovers of jazz and classical music were innovative and bursting with self-confidence.

Most surprisingly, he said: "I was struck by how similar fans of heavy metal and classical music really are. Apart from the age differences, they were virtually identical.

"Both were more creative than other people, both were not terribly outgoing and they were also quite at ease with themselves."

But Susan Nickalls, a classical music reviewer for The Scotsman, poured scorn on his theory. "What do you do if you like hip-hop, jazz, classical and rock – does that mean you are schizophrenic?" she asked. "How can you say that everyone who goes to an opera is creative? This guy should research something serious.

"I like heavy metal and I like classical and I like opera. I like Whitesnake, and my favourite operas include Tosca. When the heroine throws herself off the battlements, heavy metal people might say that's the equivalent of bashing your guitar on stage."

Fiona Shepherd, The Scotsman's rock music critic, said it would be good if the survey contributed to the rehabilitation of the heavy metal music fan, to give a more "rounded and surprising picture".

Prof North suggested fans of jazz and soul had the "best" character traits, including high self-esteem and an outgoing nature. He went on: "People often define their sense of identity through their musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain pubs, and using certain types of slang. It's not so surprising that personality should also be related to musical preference."

Some 36,518 people from countries as far afield as Malaysia, China, Japan and Chile were asked to rate musical styles ranging from chart pop to Bollywood music and opera as part of the Heriot-Watt study.

Huzzah for mass generalisations.  Since I fit into both camps of Metal fan and Classical fan, then I suppose I'm the exact double of myself. Or something.  I've been listening a bit of Dresden Dolls lately.  I was completely surprised at what they actually sound like.  In my head, I'd written them off as a rubbish ear-bleeding Murderdolls-a-like or something similarly awful.  Not the case.  Punk caberet they call it, all piano, experimental sounds and word play lyrics.  Very enjoyable.

I'll be posting later more on a fic auction I'm taking part in (just need to send the app away) and perhaps my thoughts on what I've seen on the Rep/Dem conventions (I'm going to steer right past my sudden attraction to Chelsea Clinton.  Maybe.)

But for now, I was left with this bizarre thought as I washed this morning.  With my black pj T shirt pulled over my head but still hanging on there at the crown of my head, I was hit with a sudden realisation : I'd look no too bad in a habit.

Anyone else had similar thoughts?  Surely we all did something similar as kids?  No?  Just me?

Anyone who watched the Scotland friendly - How guff was that tonight??

*shakes it off*

Here's a pic for zee014, the consummate believer that Emma Watson is impeccably classy.

Is this the first step on the road to Lohan-ism?

*snigger*

I am, of course, joking. Corona has lately been my bottled beer of choice. And bonus points for having the lime in the bottle as well. And she is wearing a lot of clothes which makes her categorically Not-Lohan.

Disclaimer: Blah as always.

Authors Notes: Crack fic to the extreme.  Time period is irrelevant.  And it’s so terribly post-post-post modern ;)  Written between the hours of 2.10am and 4.30am.  That should be warning enough for the “humour” contained within.

Your result for The Perception Personality Image Test...

NBPC - The Daydreamer

You perceive the world with particular attention to nature. You focus on the hidden treasures of life (the background) and how that fits into the larger picture. You are also particularly drawn towards the colors around you. Because of the value you place on nature, you tend to find comfort in more subdued settings and find energy in solitude. You like to ponder ideas and imagine the many possibilities of your life without worrying about the details or specifics. You are in tune with all that is around you and understand your life as part of a larger whole. You are a down-to-earth person who enjoys going with the flow.

Daydreamer? So not surprised. It's quite accurate in regards to comfort and energy in solitude, especially by the sea.  Give me a sea and a nice sky and I'm happy. It's actually what I plan to do for my birthday this year - sit by the sea for the day, notepad, music, Irn Bru and I'll be set. I usually get melancholy to the extreme on my birthday - not so much about getting older, but other things.  I've tried many different things over the past few years to combat the birthday blues - quiet family dinner, raucous night out, quiet night out, raucous night in etc etc but I'm feeling quite good about this plan and haven't actually told anyone yet, although I'm sure it'll be considered extremely sad. I just hope the weather's decent. As much as I like the rain, I don't fancy hanging out in the rain by the sea by myself.

The quiz is wrong in terms of 'going with the flow' and not paying attention to detail, but even a computer can't be right all the time.  I see I missed the 'artist' criteria only by favouring background over foreground.  That's just because I have a thing for seas and skies :)

I wrote a crack!fic in the wee hours of last night. It's not anything special, but I'll post it later. I see that 12,000 HP fans have petitioned to have the film moved back to November. I'd sign that on condition that the movie would indeed be finished to best of ability by November and that the move was entirely motivated by money (which is ridiculous because HBP is making millions and millions any time).  However, if they want an extra couple months to edit, polish, tweak or maybe even reshoot some scenes then I'm cool with a Summer 09 release.  As much as I have been looking forward to HBP, I don't want it to be an utter pile of crap when it comes out because IMO Yates needs every advantage he can get to compensate for his poor skills in this genre.

On other news, I have completely OD'd on football since the season's return.  I even watched a game between Miami FC and the Carolina RailHawks in the USL first division at some stupid time in the morning over the internet on the Fox soccer channel.  I'm telling you - I'm seriously ill.
